On this day, 8th December 1660,Margaret Hughes made theatre history as she was known the first professional actress.Which put an end of a tradition which dictated that the female parts in plays should be played by boys. From 1642 to 1660, theatre was banned in London by Parliament. In 1660, King Charles removed the theatre banand gave two men, Thomas Killigrew and Williams Dovenant, rights to produce some plays. At this point in history only men were allowed to perform on the stage, and the women who did perform had to do so without anyone knowing they were female. After King Charles gave Killigrew permission to produce a play he decided to handle his privilege differently than had ever been done before, and he cast Margaret Hughes as Desdemona in Killigrew's production of the Shakespearean play Othellow (1660).King Charles was impressed by the impact that she had on the audience that he said that females should play females roles in the theatre. Tunbridge Wells was a Restoration Las Vegas when the King added theatre to the bill.
