Magaret was born into a theatre family.However, there little to know about her early life or the life of her family because they were never famous."On 8th December 1660, Margaret Hughes first time stepped onto the stage of the Vere Street Theatre, formerly Gibbons's Tennis Court, to play Desdemona in Killingrew's production of Shakespeare’s Othello." From there on she made history. Margaret lived a lavish and wealthy life.She was also painted by Sir Peter Lely, one of the most famous painters of her time,after the acceptance of the audience she quickly became a big name in the acting world. There have been reports of her having affairs with Charles II, because of that and others; allowed her access too many perks of starring roles. She continued to perform as part of the Kings Company through 1660 to 1669(Callow). During a summer visit to Tunbrudge Wells with the Count de Gramont, now it the middle of English Civil War in 1668, she met Prince Rupert, cousin to Charles II.Many people were jealous of her wealthy success, in 1673 she gave birth to a daughter named Ruperta.After her last performance as Angellina in Shirley’s “The Sisters”, married unofficially to Prince Rupert and took a break from acting.Returned to the stage in 1676 ,she acted with the Company at the Dorset Garden Theatre, near the Strand.She retired shortly after to take care of Prince Rupert then he later died in 1682. Magaret moved to Eltham in Kent and died around October of 1719 ,as for daughter Ruperta, she had married Brigadier-General Emanuel Scrope Howe and gave birth to four kids. She later died the same year as her mother.
